-In recognition of taking the initiative of the development of vocational high schools and volunteering for the underprivileged "Technical high school students ten to have lower desire to study and many face financial difficulties. I did my best to encourage those students and helped them to have hopes. I feel so honored with this big award for my small efforts." Shin Jin-gyu, 44, teacher at Jeonju Technical High School, recipient of the latest 15th Nunnopi Education Award (secondary school category) It was two years ago in 2004 that he was introduced by news media along with his eldest son to the public, and he is drawing public attention again. He has won the Nunnopi Education Award issued by the Daekyo Culture Foundation. The Award was established to uphold the noble spirit of teaching. Shin was recognized with his dedication to realize genuine philosophy of teaching. Each winner receives Award plaque, and the prize money of 10 million won. Candidates are known to have gone through a close scrutiny including on-site survey by the judge committee. In 2004, Shin enrolled his eldest son, then known to be a highly gifted student, in Jeonju Technical High School instead of a special-purpose school for gifted students, which was quite extraordinary by the social norm. His commitment to true education was proven again with the Award. Shin has mostly been committed to solidifying the growth of vocational high schools. Spending 500 million won scholarship donated by 30,000 Jeonju Technical School alumni association, he has worked hard to reverse the waning popularity of vocational high schools and to produce new curricula and education materials for students in partnership with Architecture Department of Jeonju Vision College. He also rolled up his sleeves to help out the needy. As vice president of Jeonbuk Library for Visually Challenged, he produced over 20,000 electronic books for the visually disabled and has volunteered for Jjajjangmyon (black noodle) delivery to Dongurami Rehabilitation Center in Iksan. "Since young, I have been greatly interested in helping the needy neighborhood. President of Jeonbuk Library for Visually Challenged is a high-school friend of mine, and I have a personal experience of caring for my father who lost his vision when he was young." "I will do my small part to help vocational highs school graduates to become a proud and essential member of our society," Shin says. "With the Nunnopi Education Award, I will work harder to facilitate the advancement and growth of vocational high schools."
