"I ask 'why?' in order to spark curiosity" The nickname of Chung In-heung, 44, teacher at Mookdong Elementary School in Seoul, is "invention king." He has 15 patents, one of which is a "whistle that plays music" already commercialized and being used as an education material in science classes. He is not alone interested in invention. Like teacher, like students. About 300 students of his have won 300 awards at various scientific invention contests over thirteen years. "Kids like creating something. It is in their nature to create. In that sense, each and every student is an invention king full of creativity. But they lose interest and hate science and math as they advance to secondary schools." He says asking students 'Why?' is all that takes to ignite curiosity in students. You may give the answers and just end with "Hmm, that is funny." And that is good enough, he says. He also says it is important to find elements of interests when teaching science to kids. That is how he came up with "science magic show." With magic shows linked to curricula, he plants dreams of science in students. That’s why his students gave him another nickname "magician." He graduated from Seoul National University of Education in 1987 and has since been a dedicated teacher. In a country where fundamental science is weak, it is important to educated and nurture the future scientists of Korea, he thought. Therefore, in 1994, he founded "Research Association of Scientific Invention Play," growing now to be a large 8,500 teacher members across the nation, the nation’s largest teachers’ science association. "Korea Water Rocket/Air Rocket Launching Contest" that started at his initiative in 1996 has become the largest science event with 15,000 participants each year. "Just looking up at twinkling stars in the night sky made my heart throb," Chung says. He received Science and Technology Minister Award in 1999 and Meritorious Teachers Award on Invention Day in 2006. He receives the Nunnopi Award on Dec. 14 presented by the Daekyo Culture Foundation (Chief Director: Kang Yeong-jung). Kim Yoon-suk, Reporter, yskim@kyunghyang.com [2006. 12. 14] Kyunghyang Shinmun
