| Article publication date: Nov. 19, 2004 [page 31] Principal Kim Gi-chang, 59, I met on Nov. 17 at his Seoul National School for the Blind was busy instructing Scholastic Aptitude Test to his students. Seventeen blind students applied for the SAT test with Braille. The questions are the same as normal students except that the blind students get one and a half times more test hours than students without disabilities. "I want the students to have good scores so they can enter colleges and departments where they want to study. The visually challenged students don’t seem to study as hard as we used to. They must study harder than normal students," Kim says. In recognition of his contribution to the education of people with visual disabilities, Principal Kim was named as the recipient of 2004 Nunnopi Education Award presented by the Daekyo Culture Foundation on Nov. 19. He himself is visually disabled losing his eye sights at the age of six. Seoul National School for the Blind is his alma mater as well as his workplace. The School is a specialized education institution for the visually challenged accommodating 313 students of kindergarten, elementary, middle, and high school and adult education institutions. Except two years he spent in Busan studying physical therapy, he has never left his school. He made great efforts to write massage and acupuncture textbooks and to promote the rights of the disabled. In 1991, he took the initiative in creating an institutional framework to formally accredit teachers in the areas of massage and physical therapy. Since his inauguration as Principal in 1999, he has written textbooks on learning Braille and instruction books. He did not forget to educate himself. He earned bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Dongguk University and in August this year he received Ph.D. from Special Education Department of Dongguk University for his research on "Improvement of Massage and Physical Therapy Education for the Blind." He attributes his achievements to his wife’s support, who is also visually disabled and a graduate of the same school. "I am grateful to her sacrifice. She took side jobs while taking care of two sons so I would not be distracted from my course of career." Kim received on Teacher’s Day in May meritorious service medal from the government. Other Nunnopi Education Award recipients include: Lee Sun-jae (Tanbang Elementary School in Daejon), Park Ik-soon (Inju Elementary School in South Chungcheong Province), and Lee Dong Su (Donam Elementary School in Jeju Island), teachers in elementary school category; Lim Dong-yul (Jeonnam Technical High School), Seo Young-sun (Jungsan High School), and Woo Hee-gwon (Hannae Women’s Middle School), teachers in the category of secondary school; Jeon Jong-sook (Hansung Kindergarten) in the kindergarten category; and Lim Eun-jin (teacher at Kumnamu Day Care Center) in the childcare category.
