| “I was concerned about expressing the life of modern people consumed by stress,.”
says Lim Young-gyu, 29, Master’s course student in plastic art at Youngnam Univeristy. He could not let go of a welding rod for the past six months.
There are many sculptures that try to express the mind of people desperate to escape from the grips of the present. He wanted to create an entirely different way to express it.
One of the ways he has developed was to use melting steel rods to express ‘freedom.’
Repeatedly melting and solidifying steel rods with welder blaze, he eventually came up with the shape of human limbs aspiring to freedom.
With his work, Lim applied for the 5th University Sculpture Contest hosted by the Daekyo Culture Foundation and won the Grand Prize in the graduate school category.
His work was highly reviewed to be “an innovative expression of modern people overwhelmed by daily routines but pining for a way out.” He received ten million won in prize money at the awarding ceremony held in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province on Oct. 15.
His fame did not come as surprise as he had already been recognized last year when he won the first prize in Daegu Art Contest when he was a senior in college.
“As the modern society is very complicated, it is necessary to have complicated thoughts in expressing various aspects of our life,” Liam said. “I want to mold the life of modern people by projecting my life into my work,” he added.
