《 General review 》
The University Award, which is hosted by the Daekyo Culture Foundation, is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year. This University Award gained much attention from the beginning, resulting from its unique operation and evaluation methods as well as the restriction of the scope of participants to undergraduates and graduate school students. The University Award is achieving many tangible results, even more than was expected considering its short history. A sense of creativity, challenging spirit, and experimental efforts are well embodied in all the works. In addition, each applicant made strenuous efforts to adopt new materials and techniques to appropriately reflect his/her philosophies toward figurative arts and social consciousness. Generally, new attempts result in the lack of integrity or thoroughness in works, but all the works overcome this obstacle. All the creators of the winning works are establishing their own unique world, but the “Mutant” by Ji Yong-ho particularly deserves much attention. What is unique is the adoption of waste tires as materials and the completeness of the work, as well as the persuading way the creator raises an issue with modern civilization. We believe that the tangible results we witness today were made possible by the establishment of an arena where youths can fully express their experimental spirit. We thank the Daekyo Culture Foundation for presenting such a valuable opportunity.
