The “University Award,” hosted by the Daekyo Culture Foundation,
is celebrating its sixth anniversary this year. The works that made it into
the main contest were by 15 persons in the undergraduate sector and 6
persons in the graduate school student sector.
The overall tendency of the works was that abstractions and representations
reached a balance, and several installation works were also included. In terms of
the theme, the works can be categorized into those that dealt with the pure forms of
sculptures and those that were related to the environment, daily lives, and
social relationships of people.
The matter of content and form in sculpture can be said to be the most fundamental
element in visual arts, including painting.
The high level of interest in this subject was confirmed through this contest as well.
The work that was chosen as the first place winner in the undergraduate category
was the “Momentary false image” by Cha Yu-jin. The work filmed, at a high speed,
the moment of a waterdrop falling. This work, which deals with a pure figurative form,
was chosen as the first place winner unanimously by the panelists after heated
competition with Kim Byeong-ju’s “Diet of Ms. K” and Hong Myeong-gil’s “Drifting,”
which were chosen for the excellence award.
The works that made it into the finals in the graduate school student category
were Bang Sun-jeong’s “People in modern society,” Jeong Hye-gyeong’s
“Fly into the rain,” and Choi Jeung-woo’s “Monologue ? Just a dream.”
Bang Sun-jeong’s “People in modern society” expresses the beauty of assembly
by attaching thin wires to an acrylic cylinder, and thus demonstrates interest
towardsthe pure figurative form. Jeong Hye-gyeong’s “Fly into the rain” is a
work that uses lights and has a strong feel as an installation work.
These two works, as well as Choi Jeung-woo’s “Monologue ? Just a dream,”
fought for first place.
This work, which was unique for the quality of the red, clean finishing,
was decided for the first place winner based on support from all the panelists,
because of the strong message communicated by the work and the sophisticated form.
