| It is the third week of May. Children must have rested enough during the consecutive holidays over the weekend. This week they have to study hard again. Like the ever green garden on the school yard, why don’t we read some fairy tales that make our mind big and rich.
‘Chumseondae (Shilla dynasty observatory)…’ (8,000 won) is a fairy tale book written by Jo Tae-bong. It is good for the imagination of children. The cover vividly depicts the innocent world of Chumseondae and a baby star.
It is a story about Chumseondae, valuable for cultural treasure but useless for scientific purpose, so lonely and sad. But Baby Star shoots shooting stars and helps Chumseondae to be happy again and regain confidence.
‘Pigeon Ajjuma’ describes how a mother who lost her child in Seongsu Bridge collapse disaster heals her deeply wounded heart through a pigeon. The mother, overwhelmed by the sorrow from losing her beloved daughter even tries to commit suicide but lives a new life overcoming sadness after an encounter with a dying baby pigeon.
The writer, in six short tales, exposes the pain and shows that only love can heal the pain using the iconic symbols of baby star, paper plane and pigeon.
‘Stone Age…’ (6,500 won) is an adventurous story about six children who embarks on a journey in search of lost song of seed in order to undo the curse imposed on the village. It is a Nunnopi Child Literary Award winning tale. It deals with inescapable greed humans have come to bear while migrating from primitive natural environment to capitalistic society. A truth is found in the story that humans arose from nature and complying with the nature is the best way to live. Primitive people started to develop greed of ‘mine’ and ‘my land’ as they started to plant seeds and tried to possess more than others.
